This is a reminder that if you haven’t entered the Blog World Expo contest, you have two days left to get your entry in.
The prizes up for grabs are two full conference passes to Blog World Expo, the biggest blogging and new media expo in the world. Blog World happens September 20-21 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The passes also include tickets to the opening night gala party.
Because Blog World takes place in Las Vegas and you need to pay your own travel and hotel cost, not as many people entered so your chances of winning one of the $400 pass are very high. If you’re not doing anything in September and want to learn all there is to learn about blogging, then enter the contest and you just might be partying with me at Blog World in Las Vegas.
To enter for a chance to win a full conference pass to Blog World Expo, write a blog post on why you want to go, what you hope to get out of it and why you deserve the pass. Link to this post and send a trackback (or comment with the URL). The two best posts, as judged by me and a few other Blog World people, will received the passes. We’ll be selecting the winners this Monday. Good luck.

Has anyone watched the Olympics opening ceremonies in Beijing? Holy Crap!!! That’s the most amazing opening of a ceremony, or opening of anything, that I have ever seen! China definitely went all out for their Olympic coming out party. They’ve set the bar so high that Vancouver will look like a little side show when it does its games in 2010. Then again, China’s budget for the summer games is something like $45 billion compared to $1.6 billion for Vancouver’s winter games.
If you haven’t watched the opening ceremonies, it should be repeated tonight by the major networks. It’s well worth watching just just the wow factor alone. Here are some photos of the opening Ceremonies that was provided by Getty Images.

We were in downtown Vancouver last night for the Canadian launch of the Samsung Instinct. This is Samsung’s answer to the Apple iPhone.
The party was held at the Republic nightclub on Granville Street. The Republic is a huge two-level club and I have to wonder why Samsung booked such a big place, considering how many people showed up. I would say the club wasn’t even at 10% capacity. Maybe they were expecting a lot more people to show up or maybe Samsung just enjoyed putting 100 people into a club that holds 1,000+. At least we had a lot of elbow room.
As parties goes, the Instinct launch party was far better than the Zune launch party set up by Microsoft back in May. Samsung gave away five Instincts to five lucky attendees, there was nice finger food and while the bar wasn’t open, everyone was given three drink tickets. We found the Samsung rep and got more.

This post was guest blogged by Steven York of SEOpher.com.
People always assume that you need hundreds and thousands of visitors each and every day to make money on the Internet; while this certainly helps it’s not crucial. You need to maximize the potential of each and every visitor - but I bet you’re not even doing that.
Let’s look at the most obvious source of visitors and yet one of the easiest to manipulate: search engine referrals.
Look At The Numbers
Natural search engine referrals is one of the most sustainable, consistent and high quality sources of traffic. You’ll probably find that upwards of 50% of visitors find your website this way and they’re easy to leverage.
Why Are They High Quality?
Search engine users have an ‘information requirement’ that led them to your website. They’re after a piece of information and Google told them that you might have the answer. Whether they’re looking for a review of a product, instructions to do something or merely advice, this user is looking for the answer on your website.
So How Can You Help Them?
An obvious way to leverage this information requirement is to work out what they were searching for when they found you and present them with more options related to it. Supposing I landed on www.example.com looking for a review of a specific laptop, it’d make sense to have a region of “you might be interested in…” where you can promote similar pieces of content. I’ve written a tutorial on how to do just that on my web development blog, StevenYork.com and I recently implemented this on Seopher.com too; while it’s too early to give any statistics, it does appear to be working nicely.
How Can I Profit From This?
While this method can be used to increase page views and offer a more useful experience to search engine visitors, it can also be used to make money. Once you know how the user entered your website, you’ve got a piece of contextual information to tie in to. So (using the above example): if I land on www.example.com searching for “EEE-PC review”, it makes sense to use that information to your advantage - show advertising for the Asus affiliate scheme.
Use Analytic, work out your popular entry terms and sort out affiliate deals for each of them.
So supposing you’ve got 15 keywords that are consistently popular on your blog; find an affiliate scheme for each of them. The next step is to sniff the referral keywords (using my tutorial or one of the others on the Internet) and work out whether one of those keywords was used by the current visitor. If they are, show the relevant ad.
This means that you’ve got a much higher chance of converting because you’ve identified that the user already has interest in the subject matter. It’s all about working more efficiently. You don’t need 100,000 visitors a week to generate a decent level of income, you just need to target the ones you do have (be that 100, 1000 or more).
The Dark Side
I recently wrote about a slightly black-hat practice that could also be used to efficiently target advertising… It’s possible to manually define a list of URLs and use Javascript to determine whether the user has visited them or not. Viably, if you could research enough URLs you could target specific websites and show corresponding affiliate ads. For example, if you know the visitor has been to TNX.com, you could show the affiliate campaign for Text-Link-Ads.
It’s all about making your content and advertising contextual to the user; that way you don’t need millions of visitors to make a decent return - because almost every one could lead to a sale.

It seems my post about the Exchange Ads system by Performancing Ads raised as many questions as it answered. People are excited about the possibility of making money and getting free ad exposure on the new ad network. However, they’re confuse as to how to set up the exchange and how to book their exchange ads on other sites.
Performancing Ads really does need to improve their FAQ and add more details on how their system works. I’m sure they will be doing that soon, if they’re not doing it already. Their number one concern was to get the network up and running. In the mean time, their lack of detail information is allowing me to write some great exclusive content.
How To Set Up Exchange Ads

Setting up an exchange ad is the same as booking your own ads. In the Publishers section of the Performancing Ads control panel, click on “Exchange Ads” and then the “Create New” button. Select your 125×125 button to upload, enter the URL where you want to ad to point to and choose the categories that best fit the ad and hit save. That’s it.
You can upload as many exchange ads as you want. You don’t need to limit the ad to your own blog either. If you wish to promote something else, you are free to do that. In my above example, I am running my blog ad and a Performancing Ads referral ad in the exchange. Performancing Ads will rotate the ads evenly among my credits.
How To Book Exchange Ads
You do not have to book where your exchange ads shows up. This is all done automatically. The Performancing Ads software finds the best matches for exchange ads based on the ad category and the site category. Once you’ve uploaded your button, the system will take over and exchange your ads with the most targeted sites.
Since Performancing Ads gives every new publisher who signed up 2,500 exchange ads credit, everyone should be taking advantage of this by uploading an exchange ad. If you haven’t uploaded an ad yet, I recommend you do so now.

After our adventure in Langley with the Segway, we decided that we should get a bunch of scooters and terrorize Vancouver. I’m sure the sight of seeing five guys on 50cc scooters is enough to put the fear of God into anyone!
We showed up at Cycle BC at 10AM in the morning. It was a great day to go Scooter riding. Normally, I wouldn’t ride a scooter on a road shared with cars because the car always win in a head to head. However, since the Dot Com lifestyle allows us to ride while most are locked up in an office working, we practically had the roads all to ourselves.
We spent an entire day riding the scooters all over Vancouver. We hit Stanley Park, UBC, Spanish Bank, Robson Street, Gas Town, China Town, Coal Habour, etc. We had a great time beeping the horn at everybody and waving to them.
The full day of riding only consumed about 1 gallon of gas from the 150MPG two wheelers. The day went by with only one incident. Like he did on the Segway, Michael Kwan crashed his scooter. It’s a wonder he can balance on his two legs.

Blog Gears is a new site that allows bloggers to gain more exposure using videos. The site is 100% free, and works on the premise of a blogger pitching their blog to an audience. The blogger has to create a video up to 90 seconds long of themselves talking about their blog. This allows Blog Gears readers to find new and exciting blogs, and also to get to know the faces behind the blogs as well.
The site is only a few days old but already have pitches from some well known bloggers. I like the idea of Blog Gears. I think it will do very well. All bloggers, especially new ones, are looking for free ways to promote their blog and if Blog Gears catches on, it should give you some nice exposure. If the site gets really big, I’m sure they’ll start charging to have videos listed. This is my Blog Gears video. Please tell me what you think.

The Exchange Ads
An often overlooked feature of the new Performancing Ads network is the Exchange Ads system. This is because the explanation Performancing Ads has on their site doesn’t explain it very well.
The exchange system is a credit based system that is internal to Performancing Ads publishers. A publisher earns a set baseline of credits simply for displaying ads, and earns even more credits when ads are sold on his or her site. Credits are then converted into free traffic for the publisher
I fired off an email to Performancing Ads to find out more details about the Exchange Ads system and how it works to benefit publishers.
Exchange Ads works on a credit system. The more credits you have, the more your exchange ads are displayed on other publisher’s websites. The number of credits it takes to have your exchange ad displayed on a publisher’s site is equal to the booking rate for the site, times 100. So, if it takes $15.00 to book an ad on a publisher’s site, it takes 1,500 credits to have your exchange ad shown on that site. Credits are earned in two ways.
1 - Selling Ad Space On Your Site
When a advertiser buys ad space on the publisher’s site, the publisher not only gets 60% of the ad money but he also earn credits equal to the purchase price. So, if the final checkout price is $25.00, the publisher earns 2,500 credits to buy ad space on other Performancing Ads publishers.
Displaying Other Publisher’s Exchange Ads
The second system is a little more exciting, as it works like a micro economy. Credits are transferred from publisher A’s account, to publisher B’s account, when publisher A’s exchange ad is displayed on publisher B’s site. So the more your site is showing other people’s exchange ads, the more credits you earn to show your own exchange ads.
Performancing Ads starts all new publishers with 25,000 credits to get the ball rolling. In other words, you can get free advertising just for signing up.

As powerful and convenient as Wordpress may be for bloggers, it is not without its limitations. For example, you can only write one blog post at a time through the default Wordpress dashboard. While it is possible to import blog posts from another Wordpress blog or some other platform, there really isn’t all that much you can do if you want to write several blog posts at a time. You just have to sit through that interface, right?
Wrong. As it turns out, Speedie Consulting ordered this review to highlight a useful Wordpress plug-in that effectively lets you import CSV files as posts. What advantage does this have?
Self-Publishing in Advance
As bloggers, we can’t really be expected to sit at our computers each and every day, busting out new blog posts on a continuous (and endless) basis. You deserve to have a break sometimes and that’s where the beauty of the Wordpress timestamp comes into play. However, when you take this method, you are still writing and publishing one post at a time, clicking through to add tags and select categories.
With Import CSV Pro, you can produce a simple CSV (comma-separated values) file in Excel that contains all of this pertinent information, including the actual post itself, and import it into your Wordpress blog. Better still, each post can already come with a timestamp, setting up your posts to go live on a regular and steady basis.

Affiliate Datafeeds
The above mentioned implementation of this Wordpress plugin may sound like it could come in handy, but the real value of Import CSV Pro comes into play when it comes to affiliate marketing. You may have noticed that certain CPA-based ad networks offer you the the opportunity to download what they call “datafeeds”. These are pre-written ad creatives that you can use to advertise the various affiliate offers.
Normally, when you try to import one of these feeds into your Wordpress blog, all of the posts go live all at once. This isn’t good for SEO purposes, because search engines prefer sites that are updated frequently, rather than sites that have huge spurts every few months. With Import CSV Pro, you are able to set the timestamp on each of these posts, spacing them out as you see fit. If you get a datafeed with 400 entries, for example, you have enough fodder for new content every day for one year.
Formatting the CSV File in Excel
When you buy this plug-in, you are provided with two guides. The first guide is an ethical guide that talks about how to make money online, why you need to have original content, and so on. The other guide is a basic user manual that explains what you need to do to use Import CSV Pro. Along with this, you get a sample CSV file so that you can see the formatting for yourself.

Unfortunately, this CSV file does not work. When I tried importing it into my fighting games blog, I came up empty-handed. That’s because the formatting on this file is actually incorrect. Going through the User Manual, I saw a better example of what the file should look like. I then made my own CSV file in Excel following those guidelines.

This one did work. When I went into the Import CSV Pro screen in Wordpress (under Manage) and imported the file, I saw that I had one new post time-stamped for two hours from now. Aside from the title and post, I was also able to set the tags, category, and the timestamp. The timestamp can be an actual date/time or it can be formatted as I have shown above. This would mean that the post would go live two hours from the time the CSV file was imported.
The Price for Convenience
Yes, this Wordpress plug-in is very simple and it serves but a single function, but this single function could serve to save you quite a bit of time when it comes to publishing a series of (affiliate-minded) blog posts. So, what’s the price for convenience? Import CSV Pro has been priced at $99. They accept Visa, Mastercard, Solo, Maestro, and more.

Remember when Shoemoney and I had that RSS competition to see who can get the most new RSS subscribers in a month? Remember how Shoe’s RSS shot up over 8,000 on the last day to beat me? Well, the video below is not how Shoe did it. He made me promise never to reveal his secret.
The below video was created by The Next Web and it shows a way to artificially boost your FeedBurner count by many thousands. All you need is a Netvibes account. Then it’s just a matter of creating an OPML file with your feed URL a few thousands times and pasting it into your Netvibes page. Apparently, FeedBurner reads each Netvibes widgets as a separate subscriber. So if you have 10,000 widgets with your feed URL in your Netvibes account, you’ve just increased your FeedBurner count by 10,000.
Now that this is out in the open (TechCrunch has blogged about it), I expect FeedBurner to close the loophole so I wouldn’t brother trying it.
